00:00.000 --> 00:12.000
What is a computer?

00:12.000 --> 00:19.000
Computers are all around us from laptop computers to smartphones to smart watches.

00:19.000 --> 00:22.000
They're changing the way that we live our lives.

00:22.000 --> 00:25.000
But have you ever asked yourself?

00:25.000 --> 00:28.000
What exactly is a computer?

00:28.000 --> 00:33.000
A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or data.

00:33.000 --> 00:37.000
The computer sees data as ones in zeros.

00:37.000 --> 00:41.000
But it knows how to combine them into much more complex things.

00:41.000 --> 00:47.000
Such as a photo, movie, website game and much more.

00:47.000 --> 00:51.000
Computers use the combination of hardware and software.

00:51.000 --> 00:55.000
Hardware is any physical part of the computer,

00:55.000 --> 01:01.000
which includes the internal components and the external parts like the monitor and keyboard.

01:01.000 --> 01:04.000
Software is any set of instructions.

01:04.000 --> 01:07.000
That tells the hardware what to do.

01:07.000 --> 01:13.000
Such as a web browser, media player or word processor.

01:13.000 --> 01:18.000
When most people say computer, they're talking about a personal computer.

01:18.000 --> 01:22.000
This can be a desktop computer or a laptop,

01:22.000 --> 01:27.000
which has basically the same capabilities but in a more portable package.

01:27.000 --> 01:31.000
Personal computers come in a few different styles.

01:31.000 --> 01:35.000
The most common type uses the Windows operating system.

01:35.000 --> 01:41.000
Macs or Macintosh computers feature the Mac OS operating system.

01:41.000 --> 01:48.000
While Chromebooks run on Chrome OS, smartphones and other mobile devices.

01:48.000 --> 01:53.000
Mostly use the iOS or Android operating systems.

01:53.000 --> 01:58.000
Computers come in many other shapes and sizes, TVs, game consoles,

01:58.000 --> 02:03.000
and even appliances like refrigerators can have built-in computers.

02:03.000 --> 02:08.000
Although they may not do everything a desktop or a laptop can.

02:08.000 --> 02:14.000
There's another type of computer that plays an important role in our lives, servers.

02:14.000 --> 02:19.000
A server sends information to other computers on a network.

02:19.000 --> 02:27.000
In fact, every time you use the internet, web servers deliver the web pages that you want to see to your computer.

02:27.000 --> 02:33.000
Servers are also used in many offices to store and share files.

02:33.000 --> 02:42.000
As you can see, there are many types of computers out there and each one plays a part in our modern world.

02:44.000 --> 02:49.000
The most common type uses the Windows operating system.
