WEBVTT

00:00.000 --> 00:29.000
Alright, welcome to Pong. In this chapter, we will write our first game from scratch, which will happen to be a two-player game, so you'll be able to play this game with your friends after you're done.

00:29.000 --> 00:45.000
So here's how this game is going to work. We have this dark background filled with stars, so we are in space and we have a basketball in space that will bounce in between the sides of the stage and in between two platforms, one controlled by one player on top and one controlled by another player at the bottom.

00:45.000 --> 00:56.000
The ball will start in the center of the screen and it will shoot in a random direction at one of the players. If it passes one of the platforms, the other player will score a point as the ball bounces off of the platform.

00:56.000 --> 01:05.000
It will start to pick up speed so that the game starts becoming more challenging until one of the players loses the ball and the other player will score a point.

01:05.000 --> 01:17.000
So we will implement all of these mechanics in our game and as we go along, we will also learn a lot of programming tricks. In the meantime, we will learn about coordinates and direction and generating motion and reflection.

01:17.000 --> 01:23.000
Before we start, go to the course resources and download the file attached to this exact lecture.

01:23.000 --> 01:35.000
This png.zip, so download this to your computer after you download this file to the folder of your choice, either on your desktop or anywhere else on your computer. You'll have the zip file which I recommend you extract.

01:35.000 --> 01:46.000
That is another double click on it. If you're on a Mac or right-clicking click on extract here. If you're on Windows, you'll end up with this little file called png.sb3 and on the Scratch website.

01:46.000 --> 01:59.000
Go to your stuff and click on a new project, which will create a default project. Go ahead and click on the file and then load it from your computer and from the dialog that pops up.

01:59.000 --> 02:13.000
Click on the png.sb3 file that you obtained. After unzipping the lecture resources and after you've done that, you'll see this empty png project that we will use in this chapter.

02:14.000 --> 02:19.000
We have some sprites that are already created for you so that you don't waste time creating them.

02:19.000 --> 02:25.000
So we have a basketball and two platforms, one for the red player at the bottom and one for the blue player at the top.

02:25.000 --> 02:32.000
And we have a simple backdrop with some stars in the background. So we are in space, so at this point we should be good to go.
